Kuala lumpur: Youth and Sports Minister, Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari, has said that silat is far more than just a sport or a means of self-defence, describing it as a crucial vessel for building youth character and identity. Therefore, he believes it deserves to be elevated to the highest level, adding that his ministry is prepared to meet with all silat associations to chart a strategic future for this heritage art.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr Mohammed Taufiq emphasized the unifying role of silat and its impact on the youth. "We see how silat acts as a medium to unite us all, and as a vessel for shaping the character of our youth. This is precisely why I believe it is vital for us to raise the status and prestige of silat to a higher level," he told reporters.
He made these remarks after officiating the national level 2025/2026 Datuk Dr Raja Abdul Majid National Open Cup Silat championship. The event highlighted the government's commitment to promoting silat as a key cultural and developmental tool.
Dr Mohammed Taufiq outlined plans to explore initiatives aimed at nurturing more silat athletes, enabling them to represent their states and advance to national and international stages. The championship, themed Gema Pahlawan MADANI, will feature nearly 2,000 participants competing for top titles, showcasing the widespread interest and dedication to this martial art form.
