Kuala Lumpur:The Sepang International Circuit (SIC) is in the process of drafting a feasibility study aimed at bringing the Formula One (F1) Grand Prix back to Malaysia. This study is set to be presented to the Malaysian Cabinet in November.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, SIC Chief Executive Officer Azhan Shafriman Hanif stated that the circuit is currently engaging with the government, relevant agencies, and industry players to gather accurate information and data for inclusion in the study. The findings will assist the government in deciding whether Malaysia should once again host the prestigious race.
The study will focus on the economic impact of hosting F1, as well as assessing the country's preparedness in managing traffic congestion and public transport facilities. Azhan Shafriman described Malaysia's chances of hosting the F1 race as uncertain, indicating a 50-50 probability. The final decision will depend on the government's consideration of the study's findings.
Meanwhile, in light of potential international race venue shifts due to tensions in West Asia, Azhan Shafriman noted that SIC has not yet received any requests from affected countries. However, SIC remains open to discussions if needed, considering the preparation time required to host such events.
Malaysia last hosted an F1 race in 2017. Sepang served as the alternative venue for the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix 2026, which took place from October 2-4, following the West Asia conflict and agreements involving Formula One, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), and the governments of Bahrain and Malaysia.
