Kuala lumpur: The Senior Citizens Bill, previously targeted for tabling this October, is expected to be brought to Parliament in early 2027. Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri stated that although the draft bill is complete, the process is taking time due to engagement sessions with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and state governments. According to BERNAMA News Agency, Nancy noted that the initial timeline was set for this year. However, after conducting engagement sessions, it became apparent that many new elements needed to be incorporated. "We agreed to include them as amendments to our draft," she said during a press briefing following the Social Welfare Department's 80th Anniversary celebration. The upcoming steps for the bill involve further scrutiny before it can be finalised and submitted to the next stage. The new legislation aims to provide more comprehensive legal protection, specifically addressing issues like neglect, abuse, and exploitation of senio r citizens. Additionally, the bill is part of broader preparations for Malaysia's demographic shift towards becoming an ageing nation by 2028.
