Selangor’s Creative Economy Strategy Unveiled: RM20 Billion Target by 2035

Shah alam: The Selangor Creative Economy Strategy Action Plan was launched today, serving as a comprehensive guideline aimed at transforming the state’s arts, culture, and digital sectors. The ambitious initiative targets generating RM20 billion in returns by 2035.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the action plan is anticipated to be presented at the State Legislative Assembly sitting in November. State Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi emphasized the sector’s potential, noting its contribution of RM20 billion to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), as reported by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM). Within this figure, RM2 billion was contributed by Selangor’s creative industry.

Mohd Najwan highlighted the sector’s evolving role, stating, “This sector is no longer just about arts and culture, but also about creating high-value jobs, driving the economy, strengthening tourism, and building a global identity for Selangor.” His remarks came during an engagement session at the Selangor Creative Economy Expo 2025 (SCEE25), held at the MBSA Convention Centre.

The launch aligns with the call by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, as outlined in last year’s state budget, to bolster Selangor’s creative economy. As chairman of the Selangor Creative Economy Committee, Mohd Najwan detailed various initiatives to establish Selangor as a “trendsetter” in the sector, a recognition also noted in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).

To achieve these goals, six key catalysts have been identified: talent development, digital empowerment, access to financing, infrastructure, market access, and strong governance. These are supported by three main strategies: sustainable economic growth to drive innovation, entrepreneurship, and export opportunities; inclusive participation to strengthen local talent and expand access to creative platforms; and cultural heritage preservation to maintain Selangor’s unique identity.

Earlier, the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, officially inaugurated the two-day SCEE25 event. The expo includes a variety of programs such as engagement sessions, forums, workshops, exhibitions, and business matching platforms like CRE8Biz Xchange, along with CRE8Fund, CRE8Stage, and memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing sessions.
