Selangor to Launch Mega NUTRISEL Initiative for 900,000 Students

Selangor:The Selangor state government is set to launch the Mega Nutrisi Selangor (NUTRISEL) initiative this month, aiming to benefit more than 900,000 students across over 900 schools.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari announced that this large-scale initiative will test a comprehensive approach to providing food assistance to all students in Selangor, expanding beyond the previous program that targeted specific recipients. The initiative will also evaluate areas for improvement, such as the variety of food products offered.

The government has secured an additional RM2 million to enhance the NUTRISEL initiative, allowing for the inclusion of products like milk and bread. The expansion of the program is scheduled to begin in a few weeks and will involve a review of necessary improvements.

Amirudin shared these details during a ceremony at SMK Telok Panglima Garang, where he also distributed 746 NUTRISEL food packs containing bread, water, nasi lemak, fruit, and a portable fan to students.

Running from August to October 2026, the NUTRISEL program has a total allocation of RM12.6 million provided through local authorities and the State Economic Planning Unit. In Kuala Langat alone, 8,616 recipients from 78 schools have benefited under the program.

The initiative targets students from families in the B40 group with household incomes below RM2,000, aiming to relieve their financial burden and ensure adequate nutrition for better learning concentration. Currently, 104,640 recipients across 916 schools under the Selangor State Education Department and 16 schools under the Selangor Islamic Religious Department have been supported.

On a related note, Amirudin addressed the proposal to amend the Child Act 2001, particularly concerning penalties for homicide, following recent incidents involving students. He emphasized the need for a holistic approach, focusing on education alongside punishment, and highlighted the importance of existing mental health support mechanisms at schools and state levels.
