SHAH ALAM: Selangor recorded a total trade value of RM639.2 billion, accounting for 29.9 per cent of the country’s total trade, from January to September 2024. State Executive Councillor (exco) for Investment, Trade, and Mobility Ng Sze Han revealed that this figure marked a significant increase of 13.9 per cent compared to the same period last year.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ng Sze Han highlighted that Selangor’s contribution to the country’s total exports amounted to RM264 billion, representing 23.7 per cent. Additionally, Selangor accounted for 36.6 per cent of the country’s total imports, amounting to 1.2 billion.

Ng further elaborated on the main trade products of Selangor, stating that machinery and equipment were valued at RM273.35 billion, manufactured goods at RM101.99 billion, chemicals at RM78.65 billion, various manufactured articles at RM65.35 billion, and food at RM46.37 billion. Furthermore, Selangor’s primary trade partners included China, contributing 23.9 per cent, the United State
s at 12.1 per cent, Japan at 6.5 per cent, Indonesia at 4.4 per cent, and India at 4.1 per cent.

During the Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting, Ng responded to Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali (PN-Hulu Kelang), who inquired about Selangor’s trade performance for 2024. Ng noted that Selangor’s trade performance showed considerable improvement following Malaysia’s involvement in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) in 2022.

Ng cited that the average trade recorded in the three years prior to Malaysia’s participation in the RCEP and CPTPP was RM615.44 billion. After 2022, the average trade value rose to RM738.47 billion, underscoring the positive impact of these international trade agreements on Selangor’s economic performance.
