Selangor Commits to Equitable Event Selection for Sukma 2026

Sukma: Selangor will ensure that the selection of events for the 22nd Malaysia Games (Sukma) is fair to all states, said the state’s Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman, Mohd Najwan Halimi. As the host, he said Selangor would propose several additional sports, apart from the 28 core events, for consideration by the Sukma Supreme Committee, which is set to meet on Feb 26.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohd Najwan emphasized that Selangor does not only consider sports from their perspective. He highlighted pickleball as an example, noting its popularity in Selangor but acknowledging its lack of infrastructure and preparedness in other states. This consideration ensures that the selection process remains balanced and fair.

Mohd Najwan stated that while Selangor aims to introduce new sports and provide exposure for young athletes, discussions with all participating states will be held before making a final decision. He also mentioned that Selangor would not object if Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, as the Sukma Supreme Committee chairman, decides to add certain events after discussions with committee members, who include youth and sports executive councillors from all competing states.

In addition, Mohd Najwan revealed plans to appoint more than 2,000 Selangor Youth Movers (PeBS) as Sukma volunteers to encourage youth participation in organizing the biennial sporting event in the state next year. Since last year, PeBS has engaged in various grassroots programmes involving youth, and Mohd Najwan plans to discuss with the 22nd Selangor Sukma Secretariat to include them as volunteers.
