Selangor Awaits Registration of Myanmar Refugees and Stateless Persons for Further Action

Selangor: The Selangor government is awaiting the Home Ministry's registration of Myanmar refugees and stateless individuals under the Refugee Registration Document (DPP) before deciding on further measures to manage the community in the state.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari stated that the state government is currently compiling data on the community at the district level. This data will be submitted to the Home Ministry to enable follow-up actions with relevant agencies and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Amirudin emphasized the necessity of registration as it falls under the jurisdiction of the Home Ministry. He mentioned that the data collection is being conducted through the District Security Committees, with Hulu Langat already having completed its data compilation.

Amirudin addressed the issue of Myanmar refugees and other undocumented communities engaging in business activities in Selangor. He noted that this matter should be addressed following the completion of the registration process by the Home Ministry. The state government lacks the authority to issue licenses or permits for certain activities, as these matters are under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government, particularly the Home Ministry. Nonetheless, Amirudin highlighted the importance of considering humanitarian factors, especially in potential repatriation scenarios.

He remarked that while the intention might be to repatriate, this requires the consent of their government. Humanitarian considerations must be weighed to prevent creating additional social problems by forcing individuals into homelessness. He stressed the need for a balanced approach in addressing this issue.

In another development, Amirudin mentioned that the state government is still waiting for the Federal Government's decision on making the report on the gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights public. This incident occurred in April 2025. The state government is prepared to release the report if permitted, but the decision involves several Federal Government agencies and government-linked companies. Amirudin suggested that if there is no decision by the end of the year, or the last quarter, he will consult with the legal adviser to determine if the report can be made public within their jurisdiction.
