Kuala lumpur: Preparations for the 2027 SEA Games, which will be hosted by Malaysia with Sarawak playing a significant role, have now entered a more intensive phase. Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Mordi Bimol stated that both the state and federal governments have shown strong commitment, particularly in terms of infrastructure and facility preparations, to ensure the region's biggest sporting event runs smoothly and with prestige.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) has pledged full support to Sarawak and will assist in whatever is needed at the federal level. Mordi, a Sarawakian himself, assured continuous cooperation and assistance for the success of the SEA Games preparations. He made these remarks during a press conference after meeting with Sarawak Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
Also present at the press conference was Malaysia SEA Games Organising Committee (MASOC) 2027 chief executive officer Datuk Rashid Yaakob. Mordi mentioned that international-level sporting events will be organized as test events ahead of the Games, as part of early preparations for hosting the multi-sport event.
Rashid further explained that organizing such events is standard practice for any country or state hosting a major championship. He noted that a selection of eight to ten sports out of the 38 to be contested will be chosen for these test events. However, he clarified that the selection is still in its early stages, with many facilities undergoing upgrades.
Abdul Karim emphasized the state government's commitment to hosting the Games, formalized through an official guarantee document similar to a 'deed of guarantee' that confirms financial commitment. He personally delivered the document, signed on behalf of the state government, to Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for confirmation. The document was later presented to the federal Cabinet, signifying Sarawak's official commitment to hosting the Games.
Both the federal and Sarawak governments will contribute RM350 million each towards hosting costs, totaling RM700 million. Abdul Karim highlighted this step as a reflection of the joint commitment to ensure the event is organized smoothly and meets the required standards, expressing hope that this will be the best SEA Games ever held in Malaysia.
The 2027 SEA Games are scheduled to take place from September 18 to 29, 2027, with Sarawak acting as one of the main clusters and hosting the opening ceremony at Stadium Sarawak. Additional events will be held in clusters in Penang, Johor, and Kuala Lumpur.
