Gopeng: School administrators may temporarily close schools if temperatures exceed 37 degrees Celsius for three consecutive days. Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh stated that this measure is part of guidelines established by the Ministry of Education (MOE) since 2023 and can be activated if hot and dry conditions worsen.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Deputy Minister emphasized that State Education Departments and schools are well-equipped to handle this situation, acknowledging the ongoing challenge for the MOE to ensure student comfort and health. This announcement was made during Wong's working visit to Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil (SJKT) Gopeng, with Perak Human Resources, Health, Indian Community Affairs and National Integration Committee chairman A. Sivanesan, and State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Sandrea Ng Shy Ching in attendance.
Wong also noted that outdoor school activities, such as cross-country runs, camping, and drills, must be suspended if temperatures range between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius for three consecutive days. MOE has instructed all school administrators, including principals and headmasters, along with District Education Offices, to diligently monitor daily temperature levels at schools and within their districts.
In addition, Wong announced that SJKT Gopeng will undergo redevelopment under a RM14.5 million project aimed at replacing dilapidated buildings. The redevelopment project is expected to begin at the end of this year and will take 22 months to complete. It involves demolishing existing structures and constructing a new three-storey block with six classrooms, administrative offices, a staff room, and a sports store. The Deputy Minister noted that the school, which is 80 years old, has been affected by termite infestation in its main classroom and administrative blocks. If everything proceeds as planned, the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2028, allowing students to move into the new building.
