Sarawak to Host Media Conference Highlighting AI’s Impact on Journalism

Sarawak: The state government has announced plans to organise the Sarawak Media Conference (SMeC) in conjunction with the 2025 National Journalists’ Day (Hawana) celebrations, scheduled for June. Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department, Datuk Abdullah Saidol, stated that the conference will focus on the media and the influence of artificial intelligence (AI).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Abdullah Saidol revealed that SMeC will be a one-and-a-half-day event featuring external speakers. The primary subject of discussion will be the impact of AI on various media aspects. He noted that some have proposed discussions on the role of radio, emphasizing the importance of preventing it from becoming a ‘sunset’ media platform.

Abdullah further explained that the conference aims to celebrate not only journalists but also the creative individuals working behind the scenes, such as editors. This initiative aligns with the Sarawak state-level HAWANA celebrations.

Although Sarawak will not be hosting the national-level HAWANA celebration, Abdullah mentioned the retention of several elements from previous years, including the Sarawak Premier Appreciation Award for local journalists and veterans. Additionally, the Sarawak state-level HAWANA will include sports events for media practitioners from Kuching, Sibu, and Miri.

This year’s HAWANA celebrations aim to gather media organisations from across ASEAN, fostering stronger ties and collaboration while addressing the latest industry challenges.
