Sarawak to Export Electricity to Brunei Early Next Year

Sarawak: Sarawak aims to export electricity to Brunei by early next year, according to Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Sarawak, Datuk Dr. Hazland Hipni. The state has recently started exporting 50 megawatts (MW) of electricity to Sabah, with plans to increase this to 300 MW.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the next phase of Sarawak's energy export plans will involve exporting electricity to Brunei, followed by the Philippines via Palawan, and eventually to Singapore under the Low-Carbon Power Framework (LCPF). The state's long-term goal is to establish itself as a key energy supplier in the ASEAN region.

Dr. Hazland emphasized that Sarawak is not just a battery but an energy supplier to ASEAN, highlighting that the state has been exporting electricity to Kalimantan since 2016. He also noted that the state has been making progress in building its green hydrogen capabilities.

Sarawak launched its hydrogen initiative in 2019 with an initial production of 130 kilogrammes (kg) per day to power five hydrogen buses in Kuching. The state currently has five multi-fuel stations and plans to add another 20 by next year. Several international companies have expressed interest in investing in Sarawak's hydrogen sector.
