Sarawak To Establish Hydrogen Certification Platform To Strengthen Market Integrity

Tokyo: The Sarawak government will establish its own hydrogen certification platform aligned with international standards to ensure transparency and traceability in supporting market integrity.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg revealed this plan during his keynote address titled ‘Sarawak’s Hydrogen Vision: Catalysing Green Growth for ASEAN and Beyond’ at the World Hydrogen Asia Conference 2025 in Tokyo, Japan. He emphasized the state’s efforts to secure long-term international sales and purchase agreements to bolster investor confidence in its large-scale hydrogen industry.

Abang Johari highlighted the proactive measures taken by the state government, including the launch of the Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap (SHER), a strategic plan designed to position Sarawak as a cost-effective, reliable, and scalable hydrogen producer. He further noted the importance of investing in technology and innovation to maintain a competitive edge in the rapidly evolving energy landscape.

The statement from the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) also mentioned that the government is exploring the possibility of establishing a common certification platform that could be adopted at both ASEAN and international levels. Abang Johari stressed that the standard must align with global benchmarks, offering potential as a catalyst for a voluntary carbon trading market in the future.

He underscored the necessity of supporting this initiative with strong drivers such as governance, infrastructure, financing, workforce development, and regulatory clarity to establish Sarawak as a regional leader in the green hydrogen sector. Abang Johari’s attendance at the conference marks his two-day official working visit to Tokyo.
