Sarawak State Government Explores Expanding ASSAR to Include Non-Bumiputera Community

Kuching: The Sarawak state government is considering a proposal to expand Amanah Saham Sarawak (ASSAR) to the non-Bumiputera community through the establishment of a new fund known as ASSAR 2. Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced this potential development, highlighting plans to review the proposal with the ASSAR board of directors and management to assess its feasibility, using the model implemented by Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) as a reference.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Abang Johari emphasized that currently, ASSAR solely focuses on the Bumiputera community. However, the state government is considering opening it to the non-Bumiputera community through another initiative, possibly named ASSAR 2, thereby allowing a broader demographic to save in Amanah Saham Sarawak.

The announcement was made during the ASSAR Dividend Announcement ceremony for the Financial Year Ending June 30, 2026. Abang Johari stated that the proposal aligns with the Sarawak state government's inclusive policy, which aims to ensure that more residents can benefit from investment opportunities available in the region.

By establishing two channels, the state hopes to pool more funds and provide investment opportunities for non-Bumiputera Sarawakians. This move is expected to further stimulate the state's economy, which is reportedly experiencing significant growth.
