Bintulu:Sarawak The first stage of Phase 2 of the National Digital Network Plan (JENDELA 2) rollout in Sarawak is set to cover 350 locations with a substantial allocation of RM545 million, as announced by Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the program will encompass six clusters, with letters of acceptance (LOAs) already distributed to the companies tasked with implementing the projects. The rollout of JENDELA 2 is expected to commence once these companies sign the LOAs. Equipment transportation to the telecommunications tower construction sites should begin in the upcoming months, signaling the start of the implementation process.
Fahmi shared these details with reporters after witnessing the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Sarawak Government. Additionally, he mentioned that Sarawak would have a minimum of three submarine cable landing points under the MADANI Submarine Cable (SALAM) project, with Bintulu identified as a significant landing site to aid the development of Bintulu Port and nearby regions.
The overall SALAM project will feature 10 cable landing points across the nation. A written parliamentary reply from the Communications Ministry stated that the SALAM project aims to enhance communications connectivity between Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak. It is projected to commence in the first quarter of 2027 and reach completion by the fourth quarter of 2029. Currently, MCMC is evaluating submissions following the issuance of invitation documents for the project, which will involve the development of a new high-capacity domestic submarine cable system with resilient infrastructure, diverse network routes, and backup capabilities to reinforce the country's communications network.
