Sarawak Premier Outlines Plans for State’s Continued Advancement Within Malaysia

Kuching: The Sarawak state government has unveiled plans to ensure the state continues to advance and prosper within a stable and progressive Malaysia. These plans are aimed at bolstering the state's economic development, which will also serve as a catalyst for the country's overall strength.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg emphasized that the plans will focus on strengthening key sectors such as economic, energy, industrial, and technology, as well as expanding regional development. Abang Johari highlighted the importance of Sarawak's role in contributing to Malaysia's economic growth during his speech at the national-level Malaysia Day 2026 celebration held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching.

The Premier stated that the Sarawak Government is committed to ensuring that the state's progress benefits both the people of Sarawak and contributes to Malaysia's development as a whole. He also expressed support for the Federal Government's commitment to empowering the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). This includes ensuring that Sarawak and Sabah's parliamentary representation is no less than one-third, determining the revenue-sharing formula with Sarawak, and strengthening cooperation in the tourism sector.

Abang Johari further noted that these steps will pave the way for enhanced collaboration between the Federal Government and the Sarawak Government. He expressed hope that such commitments will foster a broader understanding of the importance of recognizing the rights and special privileges of Sabah and Sarawak as part of the national agenda.
