Sarawak Plans Strategic Takeover of Federal Assets to Boost Economy

Kuching: Sarawak plans to take over more strategic entities and assets of the federal government to strengthen the state's economy in line with the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. He stated that this initiative is crucial for expanding the state's economic dominance and creating more job opportunities for Sarawakians, particularly in the technology and new industry sectors.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, over the past six years, Sarawak has already taken control of several key assets and entities from the federal government, such as the Bakun Dam, Bintulu Port, and MASwings Sdn Bhd. Abang Johari emphasized that the state is also establishing Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros), acquiring equity in Affin Bank to become its largest shareholder, and is keen on further acquisitions.

Abang Johari highlighted that Sarawak's economic transformation is steering towards a high-tech economy with a focus on renewable energy, automation, artificial intelligence (AI), digitalisation, and the semiconductor industry. He stressed the need for a skilled and professional workforce in fields such as aerospace, digital technology, and the semiconductor chip industry to support this transformation.

The Premier made these remarks while speaking at the Sarawak-level Workers' Day celebration at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).
