Sri aman: The Sarawak government is considering the establishment of a Regatta Circuit as a novel strategy to organize regatta races across the state, which is increasingly becoming a popular water sport among the region’s ethnically diverse communities. Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced this initiative, emphasizing that it aims to strengthen both community bonds and the local economy.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Abang Johari highlighted that the proposed Regatta Circuit would provide a structured approach to supporting venues that host regattas. He noted that these events not only promote unity among communities of different races and religions but also generate local economic activity, benefiting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) each time they are held. The announcement was made during the opening of the 2025 Sri Aman Tidal Bore Festival at the Sri Aman Waterfront.
Abang Johari mentioned that the Regatta Circuit holds potential as part of the state’s economic stimulus program. The government is set to evaluate budgetary support to ensure that this impactful event can be organized continuously. Over the past three years, regatta sports have been gaining attention, with events held in various areas throughout the state, including Tatau, Gedong, Sebuyau, and Sri Aman.
Moreover, the Premier revealed that the New Year (2026) Budget would be adjusted to accommodate the Regatta Circuit, noting its uniqueness to Sarawak. Apart from cultural and water sports events, the state government is also prioritizing infrastructure development in Simanggang. This includes the construction of the Batang Lupar 2 Bridge, an iconic structure set to connect Sri Aman with Betong, Lingga, and Sebuyau. The bridge, anticipated to be completed in the first quarter of 2026, will be Malaysia’s tallest cable-stayed bridge, standing at 145.5 meters tall and stretching 870 meters long.
Additionally, Abang Johari stated that plans are underway for the restructuring of Simanggang town to enhance its competitiveness in economic, social, and agricultural activities.
