Kuching: Sarawak is laying the groundwork to develop local expertise in aerospace, satellite engineering, data analytics, and future communication technologies ahead of its planned venture into the aerospace and satellite sectors. Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg emphasized the importance of this initiative, aligning with the state's strategic plans to explore these sectors, which are poised to play a significant role in future development.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Sarawak is planning the launch of a CubeSat-based nano-satellite by 2030. These Low Earth Orbit satellites will enhance real-time geolocation services, forestry monitoring, maritime surveillance, disaster management, and Earth observation capabilities. Abang Johari stressed the need for Sarawak to start preparing now to cultivate local expertise in these cutting-edge technologies.
Abang Johari highlighted that Sarawak's technological ambitions extend beyond research laboratories or industrial parks, translating into infrastructure and technological advancements that directly benefit the populace. He noted the state's digital transformation agenda is progressing through the development of the Kuching Artificial Intelligence (AI) Data Campus in Tanjung Embang, which spans approximately 405 hectares. This campus is expected to be a catalyst for developing a regional AI Grid, thus strengthening Sarawak's digital ecosystem and attracting high-quality global investments.
Meanwhile, the Premier mentioned that the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system, set to begin operations in the fourth quarter of this year, will position Kuching as a leading model for hydrogen-powered urban transportation in ASEAN. He explained that this project would showcase Sarawak's ability to integrate renewable energy, AI-enabled systems, and advanced mobility solutions into a comprehensive urban ecosystem.
Abang Johari also urged Sarawakians to stay united and support the state's development agenda. He emphasized that the ongoing transformation aims to create more opportunities, improve living standards, and secure prosperity for future generations.
