Bangkok: The Sarawak Road Transport Department (JPJ) has commenced a 10-day initiative, 'Ops Khas Krismas', aimed at ensuring the safety of passengers using express bus services during the festive season. The operation, which began yesterday, focuses on guaranteeing that all travelers reach their destinations safely.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Norizan Jili, the director of Sarawak JPJ, revealed that prior to the launch of this operation, comprehensive inspections of express buses were carried out across the region. These inspections, conducted in Kuching, Sibu, and Miri, started three days before the official commencement of Ops Khas Krismas. The checks concentrated on critical technical aspects such as braking systems, tyre conditions, and the functionality of seatbelts for both drivers and passengers.
Norizan emphasized the importance of these inspections, especially during the busy festive season, to enhance passenger safety. He stated that while the operation targets areas prone to accidents, the primary focus this year is on thorough inspections at the major bus terminals in Sarawak, which include Kuching, Sibu, and Miri.
He further mentioned that Sarawak JPJ is working in collaboration with the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) to mandate urine tests for all bus drivers during their operational tenure. Norizan asserted that any driver testing positive would be promptly replaced by their operating company, underscoring the government's commitment to safeguarding passenger safety.
Additionally, Norizan called on the public, particularly bus passengers, to assist authorities by reporting any instances of dangerous driving, such as the use of mobile phones or speeding, to ensure a safe travel environment for all.
