SIBU: Sarawak has distinguished itself as the only state to establish a one-stop centre (OSC) dedicated to addressing the pervasive issue of drug abuse, according to State National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) director Abdul Hamediee Ibrahim. The initiative represents a significant advancement in efforts to combat drug addiction within the state.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Abdul Hamediee Ibrahim emphasized the uniqueness of Sarawak’s approach during the Drug Prevention and Rehabilitation Appreciation Night. The OSC not only focuses on drug-related problems but also tackles 14 additional social issues that contribute to drug addiction, setting Sarawak apart from other states. The event was attended by Sarawak Premier’s political secretary, Sayed Azmee Wan Junaidi, as the guest of honour.
Abdul Hamediee highlighted the complexity of treating and rehabilitating drug addicts, underscoring the need for commitment and cooperation from various sectors, including the community. To enhance the fight against drug addiction, the Sarawak AADK plans to recruit 77,000 individuals aged 15 to 45 as members of the Anti-Drug Squad. Currently, 10,000 members have been registered, with encouraging responses from the public.
Despite these efforts, Abdul Hamediee noted that the issue of drug abuse in Sarawak remains serious and requires prompt action. He called for collaboration between anti-drug squad members, AADK clients, and the government to effectively combat drug problems, ultimately striving for a drug-free Sarawak.
