Sarawak Delta Geopark Nears UNESCO Global Geopark Status

Kuching: The Sarawak Delta Geopark, which includes Santubong National Park, is in the final stages of obtaining recognition from UNESCO as a UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGp), announced State Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. He highlighted the historical and natural significance of the Santubong area, emphasizing its potential for international recognition.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Santubong area is currently recognized as a national geopark, with efforts underway to elevate its status internationally. The final confirmation from UNESCO is awaited, as stated by Abang Johari during the launch of the Santubong Archaeological Park and Wallace Centre.

In addition, Abang Johari revealed that the Sarawak government plans to upgrade the road in the Santubong area from two lanes to four lanes and construct a second bridge. These projects are expected to take three years and will enhance accessibility, transforming Santubong into a tourist hub.

On September 9, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability indicated that the recognition of the Lenggong Geopark and Sarawak Delta Geopark would mark Malaysia’s third and fourth UGGp, following Langkawi and Kinabalu. This development would bolster Malaysia’s efforts in nature conservation and the sustainable management of areas with international significance.

The ministry noted that both geoparks received Green Card status during the 10th Meeting of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council in Chile on September 5 and 6. Alongside seven other geoparks from different countries, the decision will be presented to the UNESCO Executive Board for confirmation before official UGGp designation is granted.
