Sarawak: Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has reaffirmed the state’s commitment to positioning itself as a global leader in the green economy, leveraging its rich natural resources and strategic focus on clean energy innovation. Speaking at the Rimbunan Hijau (RH) Group’s 50th anniversary dinner, Abang Johari emphasized Sarawak’s potential in the green economy, which was highlighted during a recent engagement with economists and senior management at the London School of Economics (LSE).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the LSE professors acknowledged the state’s ‘natural capital,’ which includes undisturbed forests and the potential for hydrogen as a clean energy source. This concept of natural capital is gaining recognition in global economic discussions and refers to nature-based assets essential for sustainable development.
Abang Johari added that Sarawak’s development strategy combines this natural wealth with a strong emphasis on human capital development and innovation. By nurturing human capital and promoting entrepreneurship, Sarawak aims to become a significant player in the regional economic ecosystem.
Sarawak is transitioning from a digital to a green economy, utilizing renewable energy and digital technology to drive economic transformation. The state is focusing on hydrogen, derived from its water resources, to establish itself as a green energy hub in Asia, particularly through ASEAN collaborations.
He stressed the importance of human capital in this transition, highlighting the need to train Sarawakians to propel the state’s green energy economy. Also in attendance at the event was RH Group managing director Datuk Tiong Thai King.
