Sarawak: Sarawak is making significant progress in carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) to position the state as the CCUS heartland for the Asia Pacific region, said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. He emphasized the state’s commitment to establishing four carbon storage sites by 2030, aiming to drive CCUS innovations to decarbonise key industries and contribute to the region’s net-zero goals. This initiative is being led by Petroleum Sarawak Bhd’s (Petros), appointed as the resource manager for CCUS.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, in February this year, Petros signed a storage site agreement with Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) through its subsidiary CCS Ventures and Japanese Consortium Parties for the M3 depleted field offshore Sarawak. In July 2024, Sarawak launched the Sarawak Bid Round, offering three carbon storage sites with an estimated total storage capacity of 1,000 million tonnes of CO2.

Abang Johari highlighted that these efforts align with the National Energy Tran
sition Roadmap (NETR), launched last year. The roadmap identified CCUS as one of the six critical energy transition levers, expected to create over 200,000 jobs and generate about RM250 billion in gross value over the next 30 years.

Previously, when tabling Sarawak’s Budget 2025 at the state legislative assembly, the premier announced an allocation of RM11 million for the Sarawak Net Zero and Carbon Plan. This plan includes enforcing the Environment (Reduction of Greenhouse Gases Emission) Ordinance 2023, aimed at achieving net-zero emissions.
