ALOR SETAR: The company appointed to develop Sanglang Port in Kubang Pasu has submitted its infrastructure development proposal to the Ministry of Transport (MOT), announced Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor. He noted that the company and its consultants are currently refining the proposal, focusing on the location and identifying suitable upstream and downstream activities for the area.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the proposal is undergoing improvements based on feedback from the ministry. Muhammad Sanusi shared these details in response to a question from Mohd Ashraf Mustaqim Badrul Munir (PN-Kota Siputeh) during a state assembly session.

Muhammad Sanusi further mentioned that the Kedah Economic Planning Division (BPEN) has held several discussions and technical meetings to assess the location’s suitability and the type of development proposed. The final decision is anticipated by the end of this year. The Sanglang Port development is listed as a priority project under the state
government’s agenda to boost economic growth, contributing to the ‘The Greater Kedah’ vision for 2050.

The project, set to be driven by the private sector, involves constructing a landbridge cargo port. This port will provide a shortcut between the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, connecting Malaysia (Sanglang) and Thailand (Songkhla). It is also expected to complement Penang Port’s capacity as a feeder port and will act as a hub for new energy sources like ammonia and hydrogen.

The development is aimed at fostering growth in the western coastal area of Kubang Pasu, an area currently dominated by agriculture and fisheries. Muhammad Sanusi expressed hope for federal government support and approval, highlighting the project’s potential significant contributions to both state and national economic growth.
