Sandakan: A total of 1,912 individuals from 385 families have been displaced and are currently residing in eight temporary evacuation centres following a fire in Kampung Bahagia, Sandakan on Sunday. The incident, which occurred on April 19, has left many without homes and in need of urgent assistance.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Sabah Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) Secretariat has reported that the affected individuals are being housed in several facilities. These include PPS Dewan Projek Perumahan Rakyat Batu Sapi, Dewan Sekolah Kebangsaan Gas, Dewan Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Bahagia, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Batu Sapi, Dewan Sibuga, and Sekolah Kebangsaan Karamunting. These centres were opened promptly on Sunday to provide immediate shelter to the victims.
The Secretariat further announced that two additional centres, Dewan Serbaguna Warga Tua and Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Tiong Hwa, were established on Monday to accommodate the growing number of evacuees. The number of people seeking refuge at these centres has seen an increase since the incident, highlighting the extensive impact of the fire.
Remarkably, no casualties have been reported from the devastating blaze. The fire engulfed the water village of Kampung Bahagia, destroying approximately 1,000 homes and impacting an area spanning over four hectares. Authorities are continuing to manage the situation and provide necessary support to those affected.
