Sand Spit on Kuraman Island Sets National Records

Labuan:The natural sand spit on Kuraman Island has achieved two national records in the Malaysia Book of Records, with its total length measuring 808.4 meters and its exposed section measuring 790.4 meters.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the records are for the 'Longest Natural Sand Spit in Malaysia' and the 'Longest Exposed Sand Spit in Malaysia.' The recognition was officially presented to the Federal Territories Department's director-general, Datuk Muhammad Azmi Mohd Zain.

Muhammad Azmi highlighted that this recognition is a significant step in promoting Labuan's geological heritage and tourism potential. It is expected to enhance the profile of Kuraman Island and the Labuan Geopark on a national level.

Kuraman Island, west of Labuan near Rusukan Besar and Rusukan Kecil islands, spans approximately 1.47 square kilometers and is the largest island in the Labuan Marine Park, which was established in 1994. The island's main attraction is its natural sand spit, a geological formation believed to be around 35 million years old, created by sediment deposition and the influence of longshore currents, waves, and wind.

The two national records were awarded based on precise measurements of the sand spit's total and exposed lengths. This achievement is expected to increase the island's attractiveness as a geotourism destination, complementing its marine ecosystem, coastal scenery, and unique geological features. It may also stimulate nature-based tourism and economic activities such as boat transport, recreational services, tour guiding, hospitality, and small businesses.

Muhammad Azmi stressed the importance of responsible tourism development to preserve the island's geological heritage and marine ecosystem. He noted that Kuraman Island is a key geosite within Labuan Geopark, offering visitors insights into the interplay between geological history, marine biodiversity, and coastal processes. The recognition is anticipated to aid in positioning Labuan as a distinctive tourism destination while ensuring the protection of its natural heritage for future generations.
