San Markan Ganapathi Cremated at Batu Lanchang Hindu Cemetery

George town: Datuk San Markan Ganapathi, aged 88, who tragically died in a fire at his office in a two-storey shophouse on Lebuh King, was cremated today at the Batu Lanchang Hindu Cemetery. The cremation ceremony was attended by his family, including his son Dr. Ananda Raj San Markan, his wife, and their two children, along with over 100 relatives and friends.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, prior to the cremation, San Markan's remains were brought to his home in Gelugor following an autopsy at the Penang Hospital's forensic medical department. Over 200 people attended a two-hour wake, paying their last respects starting at 4 pm. Relative M Muthy, 68, shared his sorrow at the loss of a beloved uncle who devoted much of his life to helping others throughout his over four-decade-long legal career. Muthy recalled San Markan's transition from teaching to law, noting his commitment to aiding people as a lawyer.

Penang Bar Committee chairman S Gowri also paid tribute to San Markan, describing him as an experienced and wise leader in the legal community. She highlighted his dedication to the legal profession and his willingness to support fellow lawyers. San Markan's contributions and support for the legal institution were profoundly appreciated, especially his readiness to offer guidance and assistance.

The Timur Laut district deputy police chief, Supt Lee Swee Sake, classified the deaths of San Markan and a woman clerk, B J Chandra, 60, as sudden deaths. Penang Fire and Rescue Department director Mohamad Shoki Hamzah stated that their preliminary investigation found no criminal elements in the fire. A comprehensive investigation is underway, with a full report expected within two weeks.
