Sabah UMNO and Barisan Nasional Poised for Comeback in 17th State Election: Bung Moktar

Kota kinabalu: “The ship has not sunk.” This declaration by Sabah UMNO Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin reflects his determination to steer the party and Barisan Nasional (BN) towards recovery following their defeat in the 14th General Election.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Bung Moktar emphasized that the 2018 defeat marked one of the toughest phases of his political journey, as many leaders left Sabah UMNO, even attempting to dissolve the party. Despite these challenges, he believes in the party’s potential for revival, asserting that only perceptions sank, while the party remains anchored and ready to rise again.

The 16th Sabah State Election in 2020 further tested BN, with the party winning only 14 of the 40 contested seats. However, Bung Moktar stated that the experience served as a valuable lesson, strengthening BN’s strategy and resilience. For the upcoming 17th Sabah State Election, he has meticulously crafted a comprehensive strategy, learning from past mistakes.

The party has undertaken significant reforms in candidate selection, work culture, and public engagement. BN plans to present a rejuvenated slate of candidates, with 81 percent of the 45 candidates being newcomers, including professionals such as doctors and engineers, reflecting a shift towards addressing new generational expectations.

Bung Moktar’s slogan, “We Will Bring Sabah Back,” symbolizes BN’s commitment to rejuvenating leadership, restoring public confidence, and reviving the state’s development. He has also expressed readiness to take on greater responsibilities, including the potential role of Chief Minister, promising to address basic infrastructure issues like water supply and energy within the first three years of his administration.

With strong state-federal relations, an organized campaign strategy, and a renewed spirit within the party, Bung Moktar remains confident that BN can surprise in the upcoming election. The Election Commission has set November 29 as the polling day for the 17th Sabah State Election, with early voting scheduled for November 25.
