Sabah Government Unveils SMJ 2.0 Roadmap to Boost AI and Digital Skills

Kota kinabalu: The Sabah government has announced its commitment to enhance human capital development through the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) 2.0 Roadmap, aimed at producing a skilled workforce in artificial intelligence (AI), digital technology, and other strategic sectors. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor emphasized the importance of this initiative to prepare Sabah's citizens for the ongoing digital transformation impacting employment, education, and the economy.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Hajiji highlighted the initiative's role in creating a talent pool capable of meeting future industry demands, especially in AI and digital technology. His remarks were delivered at the Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning (ASAIHL) International Conference at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) by State Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Dr. Andi Md Shamsureezal.

Hajiji noted that AI is revolutionizing work environments and that the swift progress of emerging technologies necessitates continuous adaptation by industries and professionals. He pointed out that the integration of AI, big data analytics, machine learning, and digital platforms is transforming sectors such as education, commerce, and governance.

He also remarked on the opportunities and challenges this transformation presents for universities in Asia, allowing them to expand their reach through online platforms, micro-credentials, virtual classrooms, and AI-powered personalized learning.

Hajiji expressed his appreciation for the international participation at ASAIHL 2026, which saw delegates from eight countries, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Iran, Uzbekistan, Cambodia, and France. He also commended Universiti Malaysia Sabah for its efforts in promoting lifelong learning through various outreach programs, professional development initiatives, and community engagement activities.
