Rubber Tapper Sentenced to 12 Months for Assaulting Senior Citizen

Kuala Krai:A rubber tapper received a 12-month prison sentence from the Magistrate’s Court for intimidating and injuring a 65-year-old man by swinging a machete at him.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Magistrate Rais Imran Hamid sentenced Mohd Rezuan Muhamad @ Yusuf, 35, after he pleaded guilty to both charges. The sentences for the offenses will run concurrently from today.

Mohd Rezuan was accused of intimidating Abdulhadee Chedah, 65, by using a machete at a hut near the Kuala Krai District Council landfill in Pahi on October 2. The intimidation charge under Section 506 of the Penal Code could result in a maximum prison term of two years, a fine, or both.

Additionally, he was charged with voluntarily causing hurt to the same victim under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of one year in prison, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Mazlinda Mohd Nor advocated for an appropriate sentence, while National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer Farazalila Fauzi requested leniency, citing Mohd Rezuan’s occupation as a rubber tapper with a weekly income of approximately RM150.

The court decided on a 12-month imprisonment for the intimidation charge and a six-month term for causing hurt, with both sentences to be served concurrently. The incident reportedly occurred after Mohd Rezuan questioned the victim about his child, became dissatisfied with the response, and then swung the machete several times before kicking the victim, resulting in an injury to the lip.
