RM83 Billion Development Expenditure in Malaysia’s Budget 2027 Aims to Boost Growth and Infrastructure

Accra:The allocation of RM83 billion for development expenditure in Malaysia's Budget 2027 provides an opportunity to strengthen the nation's economic foundations and support sustainable growth, as stated by Malaysian Rating Corporation Bhd (MARC).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Arshad Mohamed Ismail, the group chief executive officer of MARC, emphasized the importance of focusing not only on the size of the allocation but also on the quality and effectiveness of spending. This approach is intended to generate longer-term economic returns and enhance Malaysia's productive capacity while creating opportunities for increased private sector participation.

Public Investment Bank Bhd (PIVB) noted that the RM83 billion allocation represents a 2.5 percent increase from the RM81 billion allocated in the current year. The broader public investment, including contributions from government-linked investment companies, public-private investments, and federal statutory bodies, totals RM133.2 billion, marking a slight 1 percent increase from the previous year.

PIVB highlighted the government's MADANI commitment to good governance and reducing the fiscal deficit. The 5th MADANI Budget continues to prioritize infrastructure projects that benefit households, workers, and businesses, aligning with state development priorities. Notably, the transport subsector is expected to be a significant catalyst, with high-multiplier projects such as road maintenance, rail investment, and bus infrastructure.

Water infrastructure is also a key focus under Budget 2027, with RM2.5 billion allocated to reduce national water losses and replace critical ageing pipes. Projects such as the Machang Water Treatment Plant, the proposed Lebir Dam, and water-supply works in Kelantan are included in the budget. Additionally, the Sovereign AI Cloud project aims to maintain Malaysian control over data and strategic information.
