Iskandar puteri: Sunway Healthcare Group (SHG) today marked the groundbreaking of Sunway Medical Centre Iskandar Puteri (SMCIP), its first hospital in southern Malaysia, involving a total capital expenditure of RM800 million. The planned state-of-the-art multi-specialty tertiary hospital, located within Sunway City Iskandar Puteri, will feature a capacity of more than 400 beds upon its targeted completion in 2030.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Johor Investment, Trade, Consumer Affairs and Human Resources Committee chairman Lee Ting Han said the project reflects continued investor confidence in Johor and complements the state government's efforts to strengthen the healthcare ecosystem. He emphasized that the facility, strategically located near the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) and the upcoming Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link, supports Johor's growing population and its development as a regional hub for commerce, industry, healthcare, and medical tourism.
Lee highlighted the strong connectivity Iskandar Puteri has with Singapore, along with a growing population and an expanding base of businesses and skilled professionals. He reiterated that a modern medical centre in this location can serve Johoreans while also meeting cross-border and regional demand. The SMCIP is anticipated to support approximately 1,400 healthcare professionals, creating employment opportunities across various roles, including doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, technicians, administrators, and those in supply and professional services.
Meanwhile, Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah stated that the hospital is designed to offer a comprehensive range of specialist services, supported by advanced medical technologies and patient-centred treatment facilities. The services will include an integrated Cancer and Nuclear Medicine Centre offering radiotherapy and nuclear medicine services, with a focus on key specialties such as Cardiovascular, Oncology, Neuroscience, Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Orthopaedics, and Women and Children's Health.
Cheah expressed Sunway's long-standing belief in Johor's immense potential, underlining that quality healthcare is essential to sustaining the state's growth. He noted that businesses choose to invest where people can build secure and fulfilling lives, and families place their trust in places where quality medical care is within reach. He looks forward to establishing a trusted medical institution that will serve Johor and the wider region for generations to come.
Sunway Healthcare Group president Datuk Lau Beng Long remarked that SMCIP will be more than a standalone hospital as it will support the health and well-being of surrounding communities. He noted that today's groundbreaking marks an important step towards realizing their vision for SMCIP as the healthcare anchor of this integrated ecosystem, enabling them to bring clinical expertise, an integrated model of care, and a commitment to service excellence to communities across southern Malaysia, as well as international patients from Indonesia and Singapore.
SMCIP will form part of Sunway City Iskandar Puteri, an 809-hectare integrated and vibrant township featuring education, hospitality, entertainment, retail, commercial, and residential components. Upon full completion, the township is expected to serve a community of more than 250,000 residents.
