Kuala Lumpur:The RM8 billion allocation for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) across various ministries under Budget 2027 is seen as a significant step towards progress, according to Associate Professor Dr. Yasir Mohd Mustafah.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr. Yasir, a lecturer in Mechatronics Engineering at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), highlighted that this funding is designed to integrate skills development with social benefits. It targets tahfiz students and former Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) personnel, aiming to boost the TVET sector and stimulate the country's economic growth.
Dr. Yasir explained that the initiative could enhance workforce employability and improve social mobility for the targeted groups, provided they capitalize on the training opportunities. Tahfiz students, while learning the Quran, will have the chance to engage in TVET fields. Similarly, MAF personnel, who often find themselves driving taxis or working for Grab post-retirement, can further develop their skills through this program.
The RM8 billion allocation includes provisions for short courses at Community Colleges for tahfiz students to facilitate employment, entrepreneurship, and higher education pathways. Former MAF personnel will have access to skills training through collaborations with institutions like the Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology and the Malaysian Maritime Academy.
Dr. Yasir emphasized the importance of monitoring how the funds are utilized, suggesting the introduction of key performance indicators (KPIs) to ensure the initiative's effectiveness. He expressed hope that the training would not merely aim to meet the KPIs for session numbers but would focus on outcomes such as job placements.
The RM8 billion allocation was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the tabling of Budget 2027 in Parliament. It includes RM3 billion for the Human Resource Development Corporation, which will offer three million skills training opportunities, including continuous professional development for professionals.
