RM600 Million Drug Bust Highlights Urgent Need for Action: Lee

Kuala lumpur: The seizure of nearly RM600 million worth of drugs, primarily ecstasy, from several drug processing laboratories in the Klang Valley should serve as a wake-up call for the nation, stated Alliance for a Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the recent announcement by the Inspector-General of Police, Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail, highlighted the gravity of the drug threat, with the seized quantity estimated to supply about 12 million users. Lee pointed out that the presence of such large-scale processing labs in the Klang Valley indicates that both international and local syndicates see Malaysia as an attractive market and a strategic hub for drug distribution.

Lee expressed concerns over the dangers posed by ecstasy and other synthetic drugs, particularly to youths and young adults, noting that the social and health impacts could have been devastating if these drugs had reached the streets. He commended the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) for their swift action, praising their professionalism and dedication in averting what could have been a national disaster.

Lee emphasized the need for stronger preventive measures, including stricter border controls, enhanced intelligence sharing with regional and international agencies, and leveraging technology to dismantle drug syndicates. He stressed that the fight against drugs requires a collective effort, involving parents, schools, community leaders, and civil society to raise awareness, foster resilience among youths, and report suspicious activities.

He concluded by reminding all parties that the war against drugs is ongoing and that collective effort, vigilance, and commitment are essential to protect the nation from this menace. On Wednesday, Mohd Khalid revealed that police seized 3,586.45 kilograms of drugs worth RM598.9 million during a series of raids in the Klang Valley on September 10.
