KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Rural and Regional Development has earmarked RM40 million to improve and repair numerous KEMAS kindergartens and childcare centres, addressing immediate safety concerns in many facilities nationwide. The funding aims to prioritize renovations in approximately 60 percent of the 10,600 centres.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, KEMAS director-general Datuk Mohd Hanafiah Man emphasized the urgent need to address the dilapidated conditions of the centres. Priority will be given to older buildings to ensure the safety and well-being of attending children. Hanafiah noted that ensuring safe facilities is crucial for children to pursue their studies without concern.
The director-general further revealed that data collection on kindergartens requiring upgrades is underway across all states. He expressed confidence that the quotation and tender processes for the renovation work will commence by early February. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance the infrastructure of educational facilities for young children.
In addition to the repairs, Hanafiah announced plans for constructing 17 new kindergartens in the coming year, including two in Kampar and Tambun. These new facilities aim to alleviate the growing demand, as evidenced by over 20,000 children currently on the waiting list for KEMAS kindergartens. The growing interest from parents highlights the increasing need for accessible and quality early childhood education options.
