RM3.3 Billion Allocation for JKM Seen as Social Investment by KPWKM

Accra:Nearly RM3.3 billion has been allocated to the Department of Social Welfare (JKM) under Budget 2027, demonstrating the government's commitment to alleviating the burden on those in need, as stated by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the ministry announced it would continue to enhance a social development approach grounded in protection, care, and empowerment. This aligns with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI and the 13th Malaysia Plan.

The government views this allocation as a social investment, rather than mere financial aid, aimed at expanding access to quality care services, creating a safe and inclusive environment, and providing opportunities for target groups to lead more prosperous, self-reliant, and dignified lives.

For senior citizens, the RM1.3 billion allotted for Elderly Assistance is anticipated to benefit nearly 200,000 recipients. This includes the development of two National Integrated Care Centres of Excellence (NICE) in Penang and Sarawak. Additionally, the service tax reduction for elderly care from eight to six percent, effective January 1, 2027, is expected to reduce care costs.

Regarding persons with disabilities (OKU), the RM1.5 billion allocated will benefit over 300,000 recipients, underscoring the government's commitment to their welfare and well-being. The OKU Care Assistance for bedridden and chronic patients will increase from RM500 to RM600 per month to ease the burden on caregiving families. The eligibility for the OKU Workers' Allowance will expand to include those earning up to RM2,000, and 15 Community-Based Rehabilitation premises will be upgraded to offer specialized therapy for Down syndrome, thereby improving access to employment, rehabilitation, and early intervention.

The KPWKM emphasized that the success of Budget MADANI 2027 should be measured not solely by the disbursed aid but by the tangible differences it makes in people's lives. The ministry will continue to foster collaboration between the government, the private sector, service providers, and the community to ensure children are protected, women have opportunities, families are supported, and the elderly and OKU can live with dignity and comfort.
