Kuala lumpur: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), with the approval of the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC), has levied a RM100,000 fine each on Sin Chew Media Corporation Bhd and Sinar Karangkraf Sdn Bhd.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the fine against Sin Chew Media was imposed after it was discovered that the organization had published an incomplete illustration of the Jalur Gemilang, Malaysia’s national flag, in its digital newspaper. In contrast, Sinar Karangkraf incurred its penalty following the dissemination of false information on its official Instagram account. This misinformation pertained to a profile of the Inspector-General of Police, which included inaccurate claims regarding leadership roles in a local political party.
The MCMC’s statement highlighted that both investigations were undertaken under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 [Act 588], with penalties outlined under Section 233(2). The issuance of the compounds followed Section 243 of the same Act.
The statement emphasized the importance of the Jalur Gemilang as a symbol of national sovereignty, unity, and dignity, underscoring the necessity for its accurate and respectful representation at all times. The MCMC warned that the dissemination of false information concerning national security institutions could erode public order and confidence in the authorities.
Media organizations and social media users were urged to verify the accuracy and authenticity of the content they publish, especially when it pertains to official emblems and symbols of the country. Furthermore, the MCMC reiterated its commitment to strengthening enforcement and implementing various digital literacy initiatives to protect the nation’s harmony and stability.
