Padang besar: Restoration work on the road and slope linking Wang Kelian with Wang Prachan, Thailand, which was damaged due to persistent rainfall last November, is anticipated to be completed by August. Perlis Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah stated that the route has been partially reopened for light vehicles under five tonnes, with strict safety measures in place, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. since March 1.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the repair efforts are being undertaken by the Public Works Department (JKR). Abu Bakar provided this update in response to a query from Haziq Asyraf (Beseri-PN) during the Perlis State Legislative Assembly session at the Seri Putra Complex. Haziq Asyraf had inquired about the state government's strategy for the resumption of operations at the Wang Kelian border following the flood damage in Perlis.
The landslide incident on November 23 of last year resulted in nearly 400 individuals being stranded in Wang Kelian after continuous rainfall led to a road collapse.
Additionally, Abu Bakar mentioned that plans are underway to reopen the Wang Kelian Free Flow Zone operations. The pilot project, initially scheduled for December 12, 2025, to March 31, 2026, was delayed due to the adverse weather conditions.
He noted that the state government has sought funding from the Ministry of Economy for a security fence, a crucial requirement before the Free Flow Zone can be reinstated. "The state government is committed to ensuring the safe and orderly re-operation of the Wang Kelian border, which will benefit the economy and the well-being of the people," he explained.
The pilot project is set to be finalized with the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Economy once the road repairs are completed.
