Kuala Lumpur: The Johor Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) is urging residents living near Sungai Batu Pahat to exercise caution following the sighting of three crocodiles within the past week.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the department’s director, Aminuddin Jamin, highlighted that several residential areas, including Kampung Parit Gantong and Kampung Parit Lapis, are located close to the river, a natural habitat for these reptiles. It is believed that the crocodiles came ashore to lay eggs during their mating season. Residents who spot the reptiles are advised to contact the relevant authorities immediately.
Aminuddin explained that the reptiles may become aggressive and attack humans to protect their eggs. He noted that while crocodile attacks on humans are rare in Johor, it is essential for people to remain vigilant. Perhilitan is actively monitoring the area, especially the riverbanks and nearby villages.
Three crocodiles were previously captured near the riverbanks and swampy areas of Sungai Batu Pahat and have been relocated away from human settlements. Earlier reports indicated that a 410-kilogram crocodile was captured by the Fire and Rescue Department with local villagers’ help at an oil palm plantation, and two more were captured last Friday.
One of the crocodiles caught last Friday was found inside a resident’s bathroom, while the other was captured near a nest containing more than 50 eggs. Crocodiles at the river have also been reported to act aggressively, with one reportedly killing a resident’s goat. The carcass was discovered 20 meters from the riverbank by its owner.
