Residents in Flood-Prone Areas Urged to Follow Evacuation Orders During Northeast Monsoon.

KUALA LUMPUR: Residents living in flood-prone areas are reminded to comply with the instructions of the authorities, including being ready to move to designated temporary evacuation centres (PPS). Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the effort was to prevent any untoward incidents during the Northeast Monsoon season which began to affect several states since the beginning of this month.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fahmi expressed concern after observing live broadcasts from residents around Kampung Pulai Chondong in Kelantan, where heavy rain had caused a significant rise in the river level. “There are some who do live broadcasts, live streaming as if they don’t want to move from home even though the water is quite high and when I check (the situation) of the water in the video this morning around 7 o’clock, it looks worrying,” he said.

Fahmi urged residents to heed instructions from authorities to move to PPS for safety. To prepare for the Northeast Monsoon, he advised families to prepare speci
al bags for important items and documents to ensure they can be easily taken to PPS.

The Northeast Monsoon, known in Malaysia as the monsoon season, is expected to last until March 2025. Meanwhile, Fahmi announced the Communication Carnival 2024, set to take place at IWK Eco Park @ Pantai Dalam on Friday and Saturday, aiming to boost public understanding of government communication initiatives.

Fahmi highlighted the importance of safe internet use amidst the increasing reliance on digital platforms. The carnival will feature events such as the Rahmah Sale, stamp printing using Pos Malaysia’s photographs, telco company packages, al-Quran manuscript exchanges, and summon payment counters.

The Communication Carnival 2024 is an initiative by the Ministry of Communications to engage the local community with government-organized initiatives. More information about the carnival can be found on the karnival.komunikasi.gov.my website and the official social media channels of the Communication Carnival.
