Residents Demand Closure of Batu Empat Landfill Over Odour and Fly Infestation

Batu Empat: A 4.2-hectare landfill site in Batu Empat, near Kampung Desa Makmur, is reportedly causing odour pollution and discomfort for local residents due to a fly infestation.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, resident representative Juffri Juraimee, 73, stated that the pollution from the landfill has impacted over 10 villages, affecting approximately 5,000 residents. He expressed concerns for the safety of both the residents and road users due to the frequent movement of garbage trucks to and from the landfill.

Juffri claimed that the landfill is being used to dispose of rubbish from outside the district and that the site has not been officially approved or gazetted by the state government for such use. He urged authorities to either close or relocate the landfill, which has been operational for over 20 years, highlighting the community’s inability to endure the situation any longer.

He further mentioned that the residents plan to submit a memorandum of protest to Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi. The demand for action was underscored by a peaceful gathering held by over 50 residents at the site.

Hassan Sani, a resident of Kampung Desa Makmur for 15 years, reported that many have relocated due to the unbearable odour pollution. He noted that residents are forced to keep their doors and windows closed at all times to cope with the stench and flies.

Suhaila Banian, a teacher who has lived in the village for 19 years, raised concerns about the safety risks posed by the numerous garbage trucks, particularly for parents sending their children to school. She described how lorries parked on both sides of the road obstruct the view at the village entrance, creating hazardous conditions.
