Penang: The remand of three of eight men detained to assist investigations into an alleged attack on police in an apartment area in Jalan Sungai here on Wednesday night has been extended by three days. Penang police chief Datuk Azizee Ismail stated that the men, all in their 30s, will remain in custody until March 30. Meanwhile, the other five individuals, who were previously remanded for three days, have been released on police bail.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the incident occurred at 9.50 pm when a police team conducting enforcement duties sought backup after four personnel pursued a suspicious individual who fled into the residential area. A misunderstanding ensued with several members of the public, leading to a scuffle during which three of the four police personnel sustained minor injuries.
Following the altercation, authorities arrested eight local men aged between 28 and 39. The arrests were made to assist investigations under Sections 147 and 353 of the Penal Code, which pertain to rioting and using criminal force or intimidation against public servants. Police are continuing their investigations, focusing on completing the necessary investigation papers.
