Religious Practices Demand Respect, Says JAKIM

Kuala Lumpur: The religious practices of all faiths must be respected and should not be subjected to ridicule or mockery in any form, Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) director-general, Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee said. He emphasized that disrespecting or mocking religious practices not only contradicts Islamic teachings but could also lead to tension and disrupt societal harmony.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Sirajuddin urged all parties to remain mindful of religious sensitivities in Malaysia and to strive for mutual understanding and tolerance. He stated, “JAKIM reminds everyone to exercise caution in their actions and speech, avoid making statements or gestures that could offend the beliefs of others, and respect the freedom of religion as guaranteed by the Federal Constitution.”

He further highlighted that the principle of Islam as a mercy to all should guide efforts to maintain peace and unity in the country. The statement comes in the wake of a video circulating on social media, where three radio hosts from an Astro-owned station allegedly mocked a religious ceremony during their segment.

The radio hosts have since issued an apology for their actions, which were considered offensive to racial and religious sensitivities in Malaysia. In response to the incident, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been directed to carry out a thorough investigation.
