Kuala lumpur: The term 'religious exploitation' is more appropriate and objective than 'riding on religion' to describe the act of misusing religion for worldly interests, said Federal Territories Mufti Ahmad Fauwaz Fadzil. He emphasized that using the term 'riding on religion' indiscriminately could lead to generalizations about religious figures, including scholars and preachers who sincerely champion the cause of Islam.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ahmad Fauwaz highlighted that 'religious exploitation' specifically focuses on the misuse of religion to gain wealth, influence, or position, while clearly illustrating the dynamics between those who exploit and those who are deceived. He expressed that the term 'riding' carries a negative and harsh connotation, often leading to sarcastic and personal accusations against the perpetrator.

Ahmad Fauwaz explained that 'religious exploitation' accurately describes the power structure in this phenomenon, aligning with the actual meaning of evidence from the Quran and Sunnah. He cited Quranic verses from Surah At-Taubah and Surah Al-Baqarah, which condemn the manipulation of religion as a tool for obtaining wealth and worldly interests, an act seen as exploiting the name of Allah for personal gain.

He also referenced a hadith narrated by al-Tirmidhi, warning against those who use religion to deceive others for worldly gains. The hadith describes individuals who present themselves as knowledgeable and pious to gain community trust, while using religion as a guise to obtain money, influence, or position.

In this context, Ahmad Fauwaz advised the public to conduct proper checks before placing their trust, wealth, or obedience in any individual who uses religion for personal gain. He reminded those involved in preaching and religious work to maintain sincerity and fulfill their responsibilities solely for the sake of Allah and to attain His pleasure.
