Reliable Credit Data Key to Expanding MSME Financing Access – Amir Hamzah

Kuala lumpur: Reliable and accessible credit data is critical to improving access to financing for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) as it reduces information gaps and enables more efficient allocation of credit, said Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan. He emphasized that better credit data allows lenders to assess risk profiles more accurately, enabling well-performing MSMEs to secure financing on more favorable terms.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Amir Hamzah stated, "Financial inclusion, therefore, is not simply about expanding access. It is about ensuring that access is sustainable, data-driven, and aligned with sound risk management practices and principles." He delivered these remarks during his speech at CTOS SME Biz Day 2026 held in Kuala Lumpur.

Amir Hamzah highlighted that while government policies provide direction, effective implementation depends on a broader ecosystem comprising financial institutions, credit infrastructure providers, technology firms, and advisory networks. He reiterated the government's long-term commitment to MSMEs, guided by broader development priorities rather than short-term economic cycles.

"Our approach remains focused on three key areas. Firstly, expanding financial access through facilities and guarantee mechanisms that support viable businesses. Secondly, enhancing productivity and competitiveness through digital adoption and capability development. Thirdly, strengthening fiscal and regulatory systems to improve efficiency, transparency, and sustainability," he explained.

The finance minister also mentioned that the government continues to adopt a measured and pragmatic approach, balancing support for economic growth with fiscal responsibility, to ensure policy interventions remain effective and sustainable. He stated, "Engagement remains a priority. Platforms such as CTOS SME Biz Day 2026 ensure that policy remains grounded in the realities faced by businesses and that feedback is incorporated into execution."

CTOS SME Biz Day 2026 is a flagship event that gathers MSMEs, entrepreneurs, owners, policymakers, financial institutions, and industry leaders together to address challenges and opportunities facing Malaysia's MSME sector. The one-day program features a main conference, a business exhibition, networking sessions, and a dedicated Funding Pavilion to connect MSMEs with banks, government agencies, alternative financiers, and business advisory service providers.
