Rantau Panjang:A flood protection barrier along the Sungai Golok border is urgently requested by Rantau Panjang's residents for Budget 2027, as recurring floods have impacted around 2,000 households.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the flooding has worsened over the past two years, causing significant concern among residents, especially with the monsoon season approaching. Shahrul Ruzam, a local resident, explained that floodwaters around his home have reached over eight meters and are slow to recede. He attributes the worsening situation to the flood barrier built on the Thailand side, which has led to higher water levels and prolonged flooding in Rantau Panjang.
Shahrul emphasized the risk of riverbank erosion, endangering homes and properties, and called for the budget to include measures to address these issues. Asmah Husin, a food trader, highlighted the economic impact, stating that her business suffers during the monsoon season due to stagnant flooding, which forces traders to close for extended periods.
Wan Idris Wan Deraman, the penghulu of Mukim Bandar Rantau Panjang, noted that the flooding also disrupts education, with schools like Sekolah Kebangsaan Rantau Panjang and others forced to shut during floods. He urged the government to implement more decisive actions in Budget 2027 to tackle this persistent problem, as previous studies and plans have yet to result in effective solutions.
