KANGAR: The 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) emphasises a need for talent development reforms in the country to meet workforce needs in the high-income economic sector, said Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli. He stated that as Malaysia is projected to become a developed country by 2027 or 2028, it must foster a supply of highly skilled talent that aligns with high-income economic activities.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Rafizi highlighted Malaysia’s potential to become a regional economic leader, which is particularly appealing to investors. He expressed pride in the performance of new investments entering Malaysia and noted that the primary challenge is aligning the talent pool with the technological requirements of these investors. High-value and high-technology investments are a priority, and the government aims to provide skilled talent to meet these needs.

Rafizi made these remarks at a press conference following the first 13MP engagement session with the Perlis government. He discussed the necessity of eval
uating the country’s education system and the direction of educational institutions to support the high-income economic sector envisioned in 13MP. The focus is shifting from traditional manufacturing and fabrication to creation-driven high-income economic activities.

In the long term, Rafizi’s ministry is working towards transforming the nation’s economy from ‘Made in Malaysia’ to ‘Made by Malaysia,’ which would create high-paying job opportunities domestically. This shift aims to reduce the need for Malaysian talent to seek employment abroad. The transition involves moving from assembly work to design and innovation, requiring a different set of skills and abilities.
