Quotas For NEM Rakyat, NEM Nova Raised To Spur Installation Of Solar PV Systems – Petra.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (PETRA) has agreed to add a quota of 50 megawatts (MW) for the Net Energy Metering (NEM) programme for the domestic category, known as NEM Rakyat, after the previous quota was filled in early November. The ministry announced the additional new quota in a statement today, bringing the total quota for NEM Rakyat to 450 MW since its implementation in 2011, adding that applications will be reopened today.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the NEM NOVA quota for commercial and industry accounts will also be raised by 300 MW to 1,400 MW to support corporations’ efforts to fulfil their Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) commitments in terms of green electricity supply. PETRA decided to increase the quotas for NEM Rakyat and NEM NOVA due to encouraging response, allowing more consumers to benefit from installing solar PV systems on the roofs of their buildings.

The additional quotas are aligned with the announcement to extend the period o
f NEM programme implementation to June 30, 2025, as outlined in Budget 2025. The latest guidelines for both programmes can be obtained from the Energy Commission’s website at www.st.gov.my. PETRA also noted the need for stakeholders to be better informed about the direction of solar panel installations on roofs to ease commercial arrangements and plans to study the matter further before making a comprehensive announcement.

PETRA reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all renewable energy initiatives introduced are inclusive, fair, and beneficial to all Malaysians. The solar system installation on roofs is expected to be conducted in an organised and comprehensive manner to achieve the target of a 70 percent renewable energy capacity mix in the national electric supply by 2050.
