Labuan: The Labuan Public Works Department (PWD) has completed a redevelopment project worth RM13,965,271.54 at SMK Labuan under the government’s sick school initiative.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the project commenced on October 25, 2022, and concluded on February 28, 2025. It involved constructing a replacement building and additional facilities to enhance the school’s infrastructure. The official handover was conducted today by Labuan PWD director Ir. Mohd Faizul Mohd Ali Hanapiah to the acting director of the Labuan Education Department, Yahya Ahmad Puteh, in the presence of Deputy Secretary-General (Planning and Development) of the Ministry of Education, Datuk Wan Hashim Wan Rahim.

Mohd Faizul stated that the project scope included demolishing the existing Block C and constructing a new academic block with nine classrooms, a teachers’ room, a multipurpose hall, and mechanical and electrical systems. He also mentioned that external works such as road widening and upgrading were undertaken, emphasizing these improvements at the handing over ceremony at SMK Labuan.

Mohd Faizul noted that the project was part of the Ministry of Education’s (MOE) broader initiative to improve the quality of educational infrastructure under the Malaysian Education Development Plan (PPPM) 2013-2025. He highlighted that through this effort, PWD supports MOE in ensuring a more conducive, safe, and comfortable learning environment for students and educators. The project aligns with the government’s strategy to address the issue of dilapidated schools and enhance educational facilities nationwide, including in Labuan.

Mohd Faizul expressed hope that the newly completed infrastructure would boost students’ motivation and performance while fostering sustainable educational development for future generations. He also hoped the upgraded facilities would empower teachers to deliver quality education, thereby improving the efficiency and effectiveness of teaching and learning processes.
